The latest Ranking on Dashboard metrics data appears below, and now shows that the strongest rank correlations with ladder positions are currently associated with:

  • Percentage of Quarters Won (+0.9)

  • Q4 Performances (+0.87)

  • The MoS Win Production Function (+0.85)

  • Opponent Scoring: Points (+0.79)

  • Opponent Scoring: Goals (+0.76)

  • Scoring Shots Conceded (+0.75)

  • Own Scoring: Goals (+0.74)

  • Scoring Shots Registered (+0.72)

  • Own Scoring: Points (+0.71)

  • Q1 Performances (+0.7)

The weakest rank correlations with ladder position are associated with:

  • Own Scoring Shot Conversion (+0.33)

  • Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion (+0.36)

St Kilda make for an interesting case study at the moment given that they sit 6th on the ladder but:

  • 14th on Scoring Shot Generation

  • 13th on Own Scoring: Goals

  • 15th on Own Scoring: Points

  • 12th on Q1 Performances

  • 16th on Q2 Performances

  • 10th on Percentage of Quarters Won

Sydney are interesting for the opposite reason in that they sit 15th on the ladder but in the top half of teams on 10 different metrics.

The full Extended Team Dashboard appears below, and shows that:

  • Brisbane Lions, Geelong, Melbourne, Port Adelaide, and Western Bulldogs are the only teams to have outscored their opponents in all four quarters taken separately (Collingwood have failed to do so in Q3s where they are ranked only 14th. They have generated about as many scoring shots as they’ve conceded in Q3s but converted at only 52% compared to their opponents’ 58%. Almost one-third of all the points Collingwood has conceded this season have been in Q3s)

  • Sydney have outscored their opponents in Q1s , Q2s, and Q3s, but lie 15th on the ladder.

  • Gold Coast, Hawthorn, North Melbourne and West Coast are the only teams to have been outscored by their opponents in all four quarters taken separately

  • Brisbane Lions’, Fremantle’s, Geelong’s, St Kilda’s, and West Coast’s conversion has fallen off dramatically in Q4s this season

  • Collingwood’s opponents have converted at only 34% in Q4s this season

  • By way of contrast, Port Adelaide’s opponents have converted at 62% in Q4s, Richmond’s at 60%, and Essendon’s and Fremantle’s at 58%.
