The latest Ranking on Dashboard metrics data appears below, and now shows that the strongest rank correlations with ladder positions are currently associated with:

  • Percentage of Quarters Won (+0.95)

  • The MoS Win Production Function (+0.88)

  • Q4 Performances (+0.85)

  • Own Scoring: Goals (+0.79)

  • Scoring Shots Conceded (+0.79)

  • Own Scoring: Points (+0.78)

  • Q1 Performances (+0.75)

  • Opponent Scoring: Points (+0.75)

  • Scoring Shots Registered (+0.72)

The weakest rank correlations with ladder position are associated with:

  • Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion (+0.36)

  • Own Scoring Shot Conversion (+0.40)

  • Q2 Performances (+0.49)

To reiterate: this season has been about generating and preventing scoring shots much more than it has been about converting them. Port Adelaide provides a great example of this, sitting:

  • 2nd on the Competition Ladder

  • 1st on Scoring Shot Generation

  • 6th on Scoring Shot Concession

  • 12th on Own Scoring Shot Conversion

  • 16th on Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion

The full Extended Team Dashboard appears below, and shows that:

  • Brisbane Lions, Geelong, Melbourne, Port Adelaide, and Western Bulldogs are the only teams to have outscored their opponents in all four quarters taken separately (Collingwood have failed to do in Q3s where they are ranked only 16th)

  • Sydney have outscored their opponents in Q1s , Q2s, and Q3s, but still lie only 13th on the ladder.

  • Hawthorn, North Melbourne and West Coast are the only teams to have been outscored by their opponents in all four quarters taken separately

  • Brisbane Lions’, Fremantle’s, Geelong’s, Melbourne’s, St Kilda’s, and West Coast’s conversion has fallen off dramatically in Q4s this season

  • Collingwood’s opponents have converted at only 33% in Q4s this season

  • By way of contrast, Port Adelaide’s opponents have converted at 62% in Q4s, and Richmond’s at 60%.
