MatterOfStats 2023 : Team Dashboard for Round 12

The latest Ranking on Dashboard metrics data appears below, and uses the Match Ratio metric to adjust for the fact that four teams had byes this week.

Collingwood and Melbourne have the most impressive set of numbers, with the former ranked no lower than 5th except for Q3 Performances, and the latter ranked no lower than 5th except for Q3 Performances and Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion. Melbourne, in fact, are the only team in the Top 8 not to be ranked 12th or lower for at least one of the metrics.

(Those of you who follow me on Twitter might recall that I had decided to attempt to sneak a paragraph written entirely by ChatGPT into a blog sometime this season. While the current version of ChatGPT is good, as a number of people have discovered, it actually isn't that good. So, I've decided to abandon the idea for season 2023 and will maybe revisit it for next season, if an improved version of ChatGPT becomes available.

For those of you who've not heard or read about ChatGPT, I should give you some background and context about what it is and why it might not be good at the task I wanted to set it.

As an AI language model, ChatGPT is programmed to generate human-like responses based on the vast amount of data it has been trained on. However, creating a paragraph that sounds natural and authentic is a challenging task even for advanced AI models like ChatGPT. It requires understanding the context, tone, and purpose of the paragraph, as well as the intended audience. ChatGPT uses complex algorithms to analyze and generate text, but it still needs to be fine-tuned to ensure its responses sound natural and not stilted. It can take extensive training and constant improvement to enhance its language generation capabilities and reduce the likelihood of generating made-up responses. Nonetheless, even with advanced training, there is still a risk of generating inaccurate or stilted responses, which is why it is crucial to use ChatGPT's responses with caution and review them carefully.

Never mind. It was fun to think about while it lasted.)

Next, we have the full Team Dashboard below, which shows that:

  • West Coast have scored less than half what their opponents have scored in Q2s and in Q4s

  • Hawthorn have scored only 20% of their points in Q3s. Their percentage for that quarter is 53

  • North Melbourne have scored 58% of their points in Q3s and Q4s.

  • Brisbane Lions, Collingwood, Melbourne, and Port Adelaide have all outscored their opponents in every quarter (Geelong have done so in Quarters 1 through 3, and exactly matched their opponents’ scoring in Quarter 4s)

  • North Melbourne and West Coast have all been outscored by their opponents in every quarter
