The final Ranking on Dashboard Metrics data for season 2022 appears below, and shows that the metrics most associated with success this season were:

  • Percentage of Quarters Won

  • MoS Expected Wins using the Win Production Function

  • Opponent Scoring Shots per Game

  • Points Conceded per Game

  • Goals Conceded per Game

  • Performance in Q1s and Q3s

  • Own Scoring Shots per Game

The metrics least associated with success were:

  • Own Scoring Shot Conversion

  • Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion

  • Performance in Q2s

Sydney finish as the team with the highest worst ranking on any metric (9th) and Collingwood and Western Bulldogs, amongst the Top 8 teams, as the teams with the lowest best ranking on any metric (5th).

The full Team Dashboard appears below and shows that, amongst other things:

  • GWS have scored 58% of their points in the 1st half of games

  • West Coast have a percentage of only 54 in Q1s, 57 in Q2s, and 60 in Q4s

  • North Melbourne have a percentage of only 52 in Q1s, 51 in Q3s, and 45 in Q4s

  • Geelong has outscored its opponents by more than 3:2 in Q2s and Q4s. Melbourne has done the same in Q1s.

  • Collingwood sit in 4th on the competition ladder despite having a percentage of only 104.3, which is the lowest of any team currently in the Top 8, and lower than Carlton, who sit in 9th, and Port Adelaide, who sit in 11th.

  • Port Adelaide, despite sitting in 11th place on the ladder, have conceded fewer goals than every other team except Geelong, Melbourne, Sydney, and Fremantle. They’ve also scored more goals than Fremantle, St Kilda, Adelaide, Essendon, GWS, West Coast, and North Melbourne.

  • Only four teams have a current winning streak that exceeds two games: Geelong (13), Sydney (7), Richmond (4), and Fremantle (3).

Melbourne have won 57 quarters, despite having won only 55% of their Q4s. Richmond have won 55 quarters, despite having won only 55% of their Q4s. Brisbane Lions have won 53 quarters, despite having won only 50% of their Q2s.

  • North Melbourne have won only 20 quarters all season, and drawn one. West Coast have won only 22 quarters, and drawn two.
