MatterOfStats 2021 : Team Dashboard for Round 17

Below is the latest Ranking on Dashboard Metrics data, which continues to show some relatively small rank correlations between ladder position and what would seem like important metrics, in particular:

  • Own Scoring Shot Conversion: +0.35

  • Q4 Performances: +0.55

  • Q1 Performances: +0.60

  • Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion: +0.63

  • Q3 Performances: +0.64

On average, the teams doing best have:

  • Won more quarters (not entirely surprising)

  • Conceded fewer goals and points

  • Won more Q2s

The full Team Dashboard appears below, a few of the interesting things from which are that:

  • Port Adelaide have recorded 56.8% of their Scoring Shots as goals, Fremantle only 46.4%

  • Hawthorn’s opponents have registered 55.9% of their Scoring Shots as goals, Geelong’s only 46.1%

  • Carlton, Hawthorn, and North Melbourne are the only teams to have been outscored by their opponents in each of the four quarters considered separately

  • Brisbane Lions, Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Sydney, and the Western Bulldogs are the only teams to have outscored their opponents in each of the four quarters considered separately

  • Western Bulldogs have outscored their opponents by 1.8:1 in Q4s, 1.5:1 in Q1s, and 1.4:1 in Q2s, but only 1.01:1 in Q3s. Their performance is in the Top 2 for Q1, Q2, and Q4, but is only 12th for Q3

  • Hawthorn have still won only 19 quarters all season. Brisbane Lions, Melbourne and Western Bulldogs have each won more than twice as many

  • Essendon have scored more goals than eight of the 10 teams above them on the ladder
