MatterOfStats 2021 : Team Dashboard for Round 16

Below is the latest Ranking on Dashboard Metrics data, which is now showing that, with a few notable exceptions, teams ranked higher on the various metrics tend also to be sitting higher on the competition ladder.

West Coast and GWS are the most conspicuous teams in terms of sitting higher on the ladder than their dashboard metrics might suggest, and Essendon still surprises by virtue of sitting 12th on the ladder despite being in the Top 8 on a number of key metrics, including Expected Wins according to the MoS Win Production Function.

The full Team Dashboard appears below, a few of the interesting things from which are that:

  • Carlton and West Coast have scored only 18% of their points in Q4s

  • Fremantle have scored 32% of their points in Q3s

  • West Coast have recorded 57.3% of their Scoring Shots as goals, Fremantle only 45.6%

  • Hawthorn’s opponents have registered 55.8% of their Scoring Shots as goals, Geelong’s only 47.3%

  • Gold Coast, Hawthorn, and North Melbourne are the only teams to have been outscored by their opponents in each of the four quarters considered separately

  • Brisbane Lions, Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Sydney, and the Western Bulldogs are the only teams to have outscored their opponents in each of the four quarters considered separately

  • Western Bulldogs have outscored their opponents by almost 2:1 in Q4s, 1.6:1 in Q1s, and 1.5:1 in Q2s, but only 1.04:1 in Q3s. Their performance is in the Top 2 for Q1, Q2, and Q4, but is only 10th for Q3

  • Hawthorn have won only 19 quarters all season. Brisbane Lions and Western Bulldogs have each won more than twice as many
