2017 - Team Ratings After Round 22

Sydney's victory over Adelaide, coming as it did on the back of substantially fewer scoring shots, failed to impress MoSSBODS or MoSHBODS, both of which reacted by transferring Rating Points from the Swans to the Crows. Regardless of that, these two teams remain comfortably ahead of the remainder on both Systems.

Both Systems now have identical Top 5s of Adelaide, Sydney, GWS, Richmond, and Geelong.

On MoSSBODS, 11 teams moved rankings this week, though only three by multiple places, Essendon and St Kilda both climbing two spots, and Collingwood falling three.

Only nine teams moved on MoSHBODS, and just two by multiple places, St Kilda climbing three spots and the Western Bulldogs falling two.

That fall by the Western Bulldogs on MoSHBODS left it as the only team now ranked more than two places differently by the two Systems - 6th on MoSSBODS and 9th on MoSHBODS.

On Offensive Ratings, three teams moved multiple spots on both Systems this week, Richmond climbing two spots on both, St Kilda climbing four spots on MoSSBODS and two spots on MoSHBODS, and Collingwood falling four spots on both.

Defensively, only Geelong moved by multiple places on both Systems, climbing two spots on each.

In terms of Ratings compression, we now have:

  • For MoSSBODS on Offence the gap between 2nd and 10th is 2.5 Scoring Shots
  • For MoSHBODS on Offence the gap between 2nd and 8th is 6.0 points
  • For MoSSBODS on Defence the gap between 2nd and 13th is 3.1 Scoring Shots
  • For MoSHBODS on Defence the gap between 5th and 13th is 5.3 points

These represent a slight narrowing in the Ratings compared to last week.

On offence, MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS still have the ordering as Adelaide, Essendon and then Sydney, while defensively, both Systems still have the ordering as Sydney, Richmond and then Adelaide.

Next, a look at the current MoSSBODS Ratings compared with those for every other team in history that also had a Round 22 in its home-and-away season.

The key feature of this week's chart is Adelaide's positioning in amongst many of the Grand Finalists of previous years. Sydney has a similar Combined Rating to those same teams but is stronger defensively and weaker offensively than most of them.

ChiPS AND MARS

ChiPS re-ranked nine and MARS only six teams this week, the only team moving multiple places on either System being Richmond, who climbed two places into 3rd on ChiPS.

That left ChiPS with a Top 3 of Adelaide, Sydney and Richmond, compared to MARS' Adelaide, Sydney and GWS.

Across the four Systems, the only teams appearing in the Top 5 for all of them continue to be Adelaide, GWS, and Sydney. Geelong are denied this status only by ChiPS' ranking of 6th, and Richmond only by MARS' ranking of 6th.

Sydney continues to be ranked multiple places higher by all four Systems compared to their competition ladder ranking of 6th.

The largest disparities in the rankings across the four Systems are now for:

  • Port Adelaide (ranked 4th on ChiPS and 9th on MoSSBODS)
  • Melbourne (ranked 8th on MARS, and 13th on MoSSBODS)
  • West Coast (ranked 7th on MARS and 12th on MoSHBODS)
  • Essendon (ranked 7th on MoSHBODS and 13th on MARS)
  • St Kilda (ranked 6th on MoSHBODS, and 13th on ChiPS)
  • the Western Bulldogs (ranked 6th on MoSSBODS and 11th on ChiPS)
  • Collingwood (ranked 7th on ChiPS and 12th on MARS)

No other team is ranked more than three places differently across the Systems.
