2017 - Team Ratings After Round 19

Sydney, by virtue of sinking more slowly than their nearest rivals, have retained top spot on MoSSBODS' Ratings this week, whilst Adelaide have employed the same tactic to snatch 2nd from Port Adelaide.

On MoSHBODS, Sydney's smaller decline has allowed it to close the gap to Adelaide who remain 1st, and to widen the gap to Port Adelaide in 3rd.

On MoSSBODS, only nine teams moved rankings and only GWS by more than a single place, they slipping two spots into 7th. MoSHBODS re-ranked only eight teams but two by a couple of places, Richmond climbing from 8th into 6th, and Melbourne dropping from 9th into 11th.

At round's end, only one team is now ranked more than two places differently on MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS: the Western Bulldogs who sit 4th on MoSSBODS and 7th on MoSHBODS. It's hard to rate a team that's won 10 from 18 while converting scoring shots at 47.5%.

Turning next to the component ratings we find that, on offence, the only teams moving multiple spots on both Systems were Port Adelaide, down 4 spots on MoSSBODS and 3 spots on MoSHBODS, and the Western Bulldogs and Geelong, both up 2 spots on both Systems.

Defensively, the only teams moving multiple spots on both Systems were:

  • The Western Bulldogs, down 2 spots on both Systems
  • GWS, down 4 spots on MoSSBODS and 2 spots on MoSHBODS
  • St Kilda, up a remarkable 5 spots on both Systems (despite losing)
  • West Coast, up 2 spots on both Systems
  • Carlton, down 5 spots on MoSSBODS and 4 spots on MoSHBODS

In terms of Ratings compression:

  • For MoSSBODS on Offence the gap between 3rd and 11th is still only 2.1 Scoring Shots
  • For MoSHBODS on Offence the gap between 3rd and 9th is only 5.4 points
  • For MoSSBODS on Defence the gap between 3rd and 13th is only 2.3 Scoring Shots
  • For MoSHBODS on Defence the gap between 5th and 11th is only 3.7 points

On offence now, MoSSBODS has the ordering as Adelaide, Essendon and then Sydney, while MoSHBODS has Adelaide, Essendon and then GWS.

Defensively, both Systems have the ordering as Sydney, Richmond and then Port Adelaide.

The latest round-by-round MoSSBODS Rating journey animation shows Sydney's slight increase in Combined Rating superiority as it moves into 3rd place on Offence and retains 1st place on Defence.

Next let's take our regular look at the current MoSSBODS Ratings compared with those for every other team in history that also had a Round 19 in its home-and-away season.

We are again in the situation where the current Rating leaders are, at best, mid-pack in relation to previous Grand Finalists at the same point in their seasons. I think we just need to acknowledge that a "great" team won't emerge in 2017.

ChiPS AND MARS

ChiPS re-ranked only two teams this week, swapping Fremantle and Carlton in 15th and 17th, while MARS re-ranked eight teams, all of them by just a single spot.

Amongst the Top 3, ChiPS made no changes whilst MARS moved Geelong into 3rd, nudging Port Adelaide back into 4th.

Across the four Systems, the only teams appearing in the Top 5 for all of them are still Adelaide, Port Adelaide and Sydney.

Sydney also finds itself still ranked three or more places higher by all four Systems compared to their competition ladder ranking of 6th.

The largest disparities in the rankings across the four Systems are now for West Coast (ranked 6th on MARS and 13th on MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS), the Western Bulldogs (ranked 4th on MoSSBODS and 9th on ChiPS), and St Kilda (ranked 8th on MoSSBODS and 13th on ChiPS and MARS)  No other team is ranked more than four places differently across the Systems.
