MatterOfStats 2024 : Team Dashboard for Round 7

The latest Rankings on Dashboard Metrics graphic appears below, and reveals that team rankings on the following metrics are most highly correlated with ladder position (noting that I order the ladder based on Competition Points per Game and then Percentage, which differs from what you’ll see on the AFL and other sites).

  • Percent of Quarters Won (+0.93)

  • The MoS Win Production Function (+0.92)

  • Own Points per Game (+0.89)

  • Own Goals per Game (+0.87)

  • Own Scoring Shots per Game (+0.86)

  • Q3 Performances (+0.85)

  • Opponent Points per Game (+0.72)

  • Opponent Goals per Game (+0.70)

Least highly correlated are:

  • Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion (+0.41)

  • Own Scoring Shot Conversion (+0.48)

Overall, arguably, the the Western Bulldogs’ rankings look least congruent with their ladder position, although Essendon and maybe Carlton have legitimate claims, too.

And, here is the larger Team Dashboard, which reveals that:

  • GWS and Sydney have won 20 quarters this season, Geelong 19, and Port Adelaide 18

  • North Melbourne has won only four quarters this season

  • Geelong generated fewer scoring shots than their opponents have in Q4s. They’ve won only 50% of them and have a percentage of just 112.

  • Sydney and Port Adelaide have generated fewer scoring shots than their opponents have in Q2s.

  • Gold Coast has outscored their opponents by more than 2:1 in Q2s, but been outscored by their opponents in every other quarter

  • Hawthorn has outscored their opponents in Q2s, but been outscored by their opponents in every other quarter

  • Richmond has outscored their opponents in Q1s, but been outscored by their opponents in every other quarter

  • The only teams to have outscored their opponents in every quarter are Geelong, GWS, Melbourne, Port Adelaide, and Sydney

  • Brisbane Lions has scored 62% of their points in 1st halfs and conceded 59% in 2nd halfs. They’ve converted at only 30% in Q3s

  • Gold Coast has conceded 60% in 2nd halfs

  • Carlton’s opponents have converted at almost 75% in Q1s, as have Hawthorn’s opponents in Q3s

  • Essendon has converted at almost 70% in Q1s
