2018 - Team Ratings After Round 8

Still a fair bit of movement on the MoSSBODS' and MoSHBODS' ladders this week, with Melbourne (up 3), West Coast (up 2), and Geelong (down 2) the biggest movers on MoSSBODS, and Geelong (up 3), GWS (down 2), and Adelaide (down 2) the biggest movers on MoSHBODS.

That sees both Systems now with a Top 2 of Richmond and West Coast, but with GWS filling third on MoSSBODS, and Geelong doing the same on MoSHBODS. Richmond's lead over West Coast, though slightly reduced on both Systems, is still significant at around 3 goals.

It also sees four teams ranked three places or more differently by the two Systems:

  • GWS, ranked 3rd on MoSSBODS and 6th on MoSHBODS
  • Melbourne, ranked 6th on MoSSBODS and 9th on MoSHBODS
  • Geelong, ranked 8th on MoSSBODS and 3rd on MoSHBODS
  • Adelaide, ranked 9th on MoSSBODS and 5th on MoSHBODS

Note though that ratings remain fairly compressed in both Systems, so much so that getting these four teams' MoSHBODS' ranking to accord with MoSSBODS' would require rating changes of only between 1 and 4 points.

Looking next at the component ratings, we see that Richmond remain ranked number one on offence and defence by both Systems, whilst Melbourne has screamed up the charts on MoSSBODS to grab second on offence, displacing Adelaide and leaving West Coast in third. On MoSHBODS, Adelaide remain second on offence and West Coast third.

Defensively, Port Adelaide grabbed second from GWS on MoSSBODS, while GWS and Sydney retain second and third on MoSHBODS.

Looking across all 18 teams we find that:

  • GWS is ranked 5th by MoSSBODS on Offence and 8th by MoSHBODS
  • Hawthorn is ranked 13th by MoSSBODS on Offence and 9th by MoSHBODS
  • Port Adelaide is ranked 2nd by MoSSBODS on Defence and 5th by MoSHBODS
  • Geelong is ranked 7th by MoSSBODS on Defence and 4th by MoSHBODS

No other team is ranked more than two places differently by the two Systems on either rating component.

In the latest version of the animated GIF, which appears below, we see the continued rating aloofness of the Tigers and the flashmob still milling slightly east of the origin.

Again this week, we can get a sense of Richmond's dominance in an historical context by looking at how its and the other 2018 teams' MoSSBODS Ratings compare with those of previous Grand Finalists and other teams at the same point in the season (now, after Round 8).

After another week of mostly low scores, subdued offensive ratings remain, and it is still the case that only 8 teams have positive ratings on offence while 12 do on defence.

Like the MoS twins, ChiPS and MARS both also have the Tigers ranked first. After that, ChiPS has it as West Coast (up 4) in second, and then GWS (down 1) in third, while MARS has an unchanged second and third of Adelaide and Geelong. MARS seems oddly enamoured with the Crows this season.

The two Systems now differ by more than two places in their rankings of only five teams:

  • West Coast (ranked 2nd on ChiPS and 5th on MARS)
  • GWS (ranked 3rd on ChiPS and 6th on MARS)
  • Collingwood (ranked 7th on ChiPS and 10th on MARS)
  • Adelaide (ranked 10th on ChiPS and 2nd on MARS)
  • Western Bulldogs (ranked 15th on ChiPS and 12th on MARS)

And, finally, broadening our comparison to look across the team rankings of all four Systems, comparing them with the current competition ladder, we find that:

  • Hawthorn's, Gold Coast's, Sydney's, GWS's and Collingwood's ladder positions are most different from their average Rating System ranking. The first two teams on that list are higher on the ladder, and the last three lower on the ladder than their average Rating System ranking would lead us to expect.
  • Geelong (3rd to 8th) is ranked five places differently across the Rating Systems.
  • Hawthorn (6th to 11th) is ranked five places differently across the Rating Systems.
  • Collingwood (5th to 10th) is also ranked five places differently across the Rating Systems.
  • No other team is ranked more than three places differently across the Rating Systems.
