2016 - Round 9 Results - The Wrong Kind of Upsets

Only three teams lost this weekend who were favourites with the TAB at the start of the week. Two of those losses were by teams Investors had no interest in, there being no head-to-head or line action in their games, and the third, Fremantle's, was an unwelcome one, since the Head-to-Head Fund had opted for the home team favourite and the Line Fund had taken the Dockers giving 2.5 points start.

Across the weekend, the Head-to-Head Fund recorded its 5th-straight losing round, and the Line Fund only its second losing round of the season, which left too much to do for the Overs/Unders Fund to drag the Overall Portfolio into profit from the week, despite its 4 from 5 performance.

All told, the Overall Portfolio shed just over 2c to leave it up by 19.5c on the season.

TIPS AND PREDICTIONS

All but one of the weekend's winners was the team higher on the competition ladder than their opponent, which provided Consult The Ladder with a competition-high 8 from 9 performance for the round. Home Sweet Home did worst with just a 5 from 9 haul. Across all of the Head-to-Head Predictors, the average for the round was 6.33 from 9, the equal-third lowest average of the season, matching the identical average from Round 8 and better than the 6.11 average from Round 4.

MoSSBODS_Marg chose correctly in 6 games, which was good enough for it to preserve its two-tip lead over BKB on the MoS Leaderboard. MoSSBODS_Marg's record is now 61/72 (75%).

Amongst the Margin Predictors MoSSBODS_Marg fared less well, its mean absolute error (MAE) of 33.7 points per game the worst in the league this week. Best was ENS_Linear's 27.7 points per game.

Overall, the Predictors averaged just under 30 points per game, and ENS_Greedy_MoSS did enough to stay top of the league, a position it now holds by just under 14 points from ENS_Linear_MoSS which, in turns holds about a 3-goal lead over C_Marg.

MoSSBODS_Marg continues to outperform the major bookmaker-based predictors, but its decline over recent weeks is cause for some minor feelings of disquiet at this point in the season. An improved performance next week would be most welcomed.

The MoSSBODS family troubles spread into Head-to-Head Probability Prediction too, where MoSSBODS_Prob recorded easily the round's lowest probability score, the four other Probability Predictors all turning in roughly equal scores, leaving C_Prob at the top of the Leaderboard.
